Discussion #1: Introductions

Welcome everyone to New Media 11! I’m excited to meet each of you and share my passion for the new landscape of reading and writing as we explore the multimodal digital world of literature, games, journalism, and computation. In this first week of the course we will spend time with the Course Overview, getting to know the course navigation, and getting to know each other.

Your first step is to check out the tabs along the top of the site and read through the content in the Syllabus: Big Ideas & Curricular Competencies, Expectations, Assessment, and Course Readings. The final sections of the Syllabus include a Student Survey through which I hope to learn more about you, how you feel about read, writing, and digital media, and how I can support your learning throughout the course. You will also notice at the end of the syllabus there is an Informal Feedback form which I invite you to complete at any time throughout the course to share what is going well, what is tricky and what could be done differently. Reflection is an important part of learning and I am ever growing in my own teaching practice – your feedback helps me!

You can also contact me at any time through our course email (2022newmedia11@gmail.com) or join my open google meet room on Mondays 10:00-11:00am (PST) and/or Thursdays 2:00-3:00pm (PST).

Please connect with me at anytime with questions, concerns, and comments – I’m hear to support your learning journey.

Discussion #1: Connect with the Class Community

Our first activity in New Media 11 is to connect as a community by sharing in the discussion board below. I’m excited to get to know each of you and it will be interesting to see what we have in common and ways that we can learn from each other.

First: Write a Comment

Choose ONE (1) of the following sentence starters to extend into a paragraph as a way to introduce yourself to the class using the “Comment” area at the bottom of the page. You will see my post to begin the discussion.

  • The verb I like doing the most . . .
  • The adjective my friends use for me . . .
  • The noun I couldn’t live without . . .
  • If I looked out my window to see my favourite view, it would be . . .
  • If you shared my headphones, it would sound like . . .
  • If my present and future were chapters, they would be titled . . .
  • If I were to describe my perfect teacher, he/she/they would . . .
  • My favourite kinds of movies are . . .
  • loved/hated one or more of the books we read last year because . . .

Then: Post a Reply

Once you have made your initial comment, “Reply” to at least one other student’s post. Your reply post could:

  • ask questions (for example: why did you move to BC?)
  • note similarities in preferences (for example: I’m also a huge fan of EMINEM and have all his albums on vinyl . . .)
  • indicate a difference in preferences (for example: I’ve never listened to Black Sabbath, but my favourite band is . . . )

  1. Hi! I’m excited to meet you. I moved to Vancouver Island from Winnipeg, Manitoba in 2008, and I’ve been teaching grade 10-12 English in many forms for 17 years.

If you shared my headphones, it would sound like an eclectic mix of almost every genre (except country!). Regardless of the song, it would likely be very loud. Music has always been an important part of my life – my husband even proposed to me right before a Pink Floyd concert (Roger Waters, Dark Side of the Moon). You will often find me spending my summers at music festivals because I LOOOOVE live music – I have been mourning the loss of this part of my life since the pandemic began last spring – mending it with live streaming and virtual concerts… but they just aren’t the same :(. Because my tastes are so extensive, I often find the question “what/who is your favourite band/singer?” very hard to answer—there are too many awesome bands! In high school my favourite bands were Pink Floyd, Our Lady Peace, SLAYER, EMINEM, Metallica, The Notorious BIG, Dr Dre and Blackstreet, and Black Sabbath (who I was SOO excited to see live last summer before the pandemic ended that possibility). While this hasn’t changed (they will likely be my faves forever), the list continues to grow: U2, Radiohead, Cake, Queens of the Stone Age, Daft Punk, Gorillaz, Moby, Too Many Zoos, Dessa, and I could just keep going. Not only do I love to listen to music, but I also love playing it – having been a member of a number of different bands since I was 16. My favourite band of all time would be “Renault 5”, a French SKA band I played tenor sax in when I lived in Winnipeg. We played lots of gigs, but the coolest thing was when we got to record a song in a real recording studio – such a cool experience! I also used to run a Free the Children Garage Band Concert annually to raise awareness and funds to support children and youth in war-torn countries. In 2019, I started a rock band club and they got to play at the Duncan Show Room a few times, but it’s on hold this year due to COVID.

I’m looking forward to getting to know each of you throughout the course and share with you my passion for all forms of creative expression!
