Immigrants (We Get the Job Done)

Within the political climate and all the xenophobia that’s persisting within the conversation, it felt like a really unique opportunity to give a voice to the immigrant narrative, and to shine a spotlight on, as the song says, ‘America’s ghost writers’ — a lot of people that make this country great and that we don’t often get to see in mainstream media.

Privilege & Power

Review our Word Splash from lesson 2 and Adichie’s warning about “the danger of a single story.” Think about the connection between Adichie’s warning and the notions of privilege and power as depicted in this music video

Watch K’naan, Snow Tha Product, Riz MC, & Residente’s (2016). Immigrants (We Get the Job Done) music video and explore the lyrics. Use the discussion space below to annotate the text. Use the See-Think-Wonder-Connect routine and think about the other texts we’ve explored.

  • What is the message of this video?
  • Who is telling the story?
  • Whose story is it?
  • Why might this be significant?

Apply these same questions when you play and reflect on your play experience of A. M. Darke’s (he/her/they) game ‘Ye or NAY? below. In this game, Darke plays on the classic tabletop “Guess Who?” model to examine aspects of Black male identity. You will need a partner to play this game with.
